Index of Burials

San Juan Burial Indexes, 1747–1908

San Juan Parish Records and burial indexes from 1747 to 1908 are presented here. Fortunately, this collection was a little easier to organize because I followed the same guidelines previously used for the baptism and marriage records. In addition, there was only one index book that covered the years from 1867 to 1892. Although FamilySearch currently lists the records as extending to 1920, that information is incorrect.

Organization of the Burial Books

It was also interesting to discover that the burial books were not separated by race. Furthermore, many of the books created after 1796 already included their own indexes, which made the research process more manageable.

Another important detail is that very few books appear to be missing from the collection. For example, Books 5 through 49 are still extant, with the exception of Book #29, which covered the years 1835 to 1837. Therefore, if my calculations are correct, the surviving records represent approximately 150 years of burial documentation for San Juan.

Why These Records Matter

Moreover, these records provide researchers with an extraordinary opportunity to trace families across multiple generations. As a result, genealogists can often connect individuals through burial entries, parish references, and related sacramental records.

In many cases, the indexes also simplify the process of locating ancestors within the original books. Consequently, this collection stands as one of the most valuable resources for anyone researching families connected to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Part I. Burial Indexes, 1747–1802

This table covers the years from 1747 to 1802. Fortunately, only Books 13 and 14 contain indexes, which helps simplify portions of the research process.

Condition of the Earlier Records

However, many of the earlier documents are not in the best physical condition. As a result, some entries may be difficult to read because of fading ink, deterioration, staining, or damage caused by age and handling over the centuries.

Nevertheless, these records remain an invaluable resource for researchers tracing families connected to San Juan, Puerto Rico. In addition, they provide important historical insight into the parish community during the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries.

Transcription Help Welcome

Please let me know if anyone decides to transcribe any of these books and would like me to host the completed transcriptions here. By working together, we can continue preserving and improving access to these important historical and genealogical records for future generations.

Part II. San Juan Parish Records: Burial Indexes, 1802–1867

Research Value of the Records

Furthermore, the records from this period continue to provide valuable insight into the families and communities connected to San Juan, Puerto Rico. As a result, researchers may be able to trace multiple generations through burial entries and related parish documentation.

In addition, these records often provide clues about family relationships, social status, occupations, and historical events affecting the local population. Consequently, they remain one of the most important resources for studying nineteenth-century San Juan families.

Preservation and Legibility

Nevertheless, some books may still contain faded handwriting, damaged pages, or other preservation issues due to age and long-term use. Therefore, researchers should review the original images carefully and compare entries whenever possible.

Overall, this collection represents an important resource for anyone researching nineteenth-century Puerto Rican families and parish history.

Part III. San Juan Parish Records: Burial Indexes, 1867–1892

This section focuses on the burial indexes for San Juan Parish Records from 1867 to 1892. More specifically, it includes the index for Books 40, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, and 48, covering the years 1867 to 1884.

Multi-Year Index for Selected Burial Books

This index is the only one that covers multiple years. Therefore, I created this table to help researchers navigate the index more efficiently and locate entries with greater ease.

Books Not Included in This Table

Please note that Book 41 contains its own separate index and, consequently, is not included in this table. Likewise, Book 47 also includes its own index and has been excluded from this compilation.

Special Note About Book 48

Book 48, however, is partially included in this table even though it also contains its own individual index. Nevertheless, I decided to include it here for the sake of continuity and convenience.

Important Navigation Note

In addition, researchers should be aware that the section for the letter “L” continues directly into the index for the letter “R” on Image 62. Therefore, it is important to continue reviewing the following images carefully to avoid overlooking entries.

Part IV. Burial Indexes: Military Books

This section focuses on the burial indexes found in the military books. In particular, Book #3 reflects soldiers stationed in El Morro from various regiments.

Military Books 1804 to 1936

Military Records and El Morro

These records may be especially useful for researchers studying military families, soldiers stationed in San Juan, and individuals connected to El Morro. In addition, they may provide clues about service members who lived, served, or died while assigned to different regiments in Puerto Rico.

Books Covering 1915–1936

The books covering the years 1915 to 1936 have a format that differs from what we usually see in other parish books. Instead, they are arranged more like a ledger, almost like an account of the activities that took place at the church.

Research Note for World War I Veterans

Therefore, researchers should review these books slowly and pay close attention to the index. From what I determined, this section may provide valuable information about World War I veterans and other military personnel connected to San Juan.
