San Juan Parish Records Index of Baptisms

Catedral Nuestra Señora de los Remedios, San Juan Parish Records, Index of Baptisms

Introduction

“San Juan Parish Records, Index of Baptisms;” are prepared in two ways. First, I must state that this was the most complex index I have worked on. So despite the overwhelming amounts of records, the lack of indexes, and how it was filmed, I present it in an easy-to-follow format. When available, there are transcriptions included. Finally, I provided tables that included a complete breakdown of various indexes of books. It may appear overwhelming, but once you become familiar with the format here, it will be easier to navigate.

First, there are two substantial index books. One covers the whites, and another one covers the Pardo books. This is the main focus of this article. It is pretty complex if you have attempted to navigate this film. As I stated, the breakdown presented here will make it easier to research.

Set-up of Tables

The first section pertains to the White (Blancos) Books. All are presented in tables (Tables 1-9). The first table summarizes the earlier books (1706 to 1815). (See table 1.) Then you have another table covering that vast index from 1815 to 1877. (See tables 1 through 9.) I am also color-coordinating the four sections in this order; Whites, Military, Pardos, and finally, All Classes.

This includes the race that FamilySearch didn’t identify. First, you must go into the Book and look at the first page. If f you are lucky, the book cover is there, or at the least, the introduction page.

These two pages identify the content of the Book. For example, it will specify the race, the years, and the number of documents (hojas.) If the cover page is not there, I go to the index if there is one. They will usually identify the same information. If they are absent, I will read the documents in the Book. For example, looking at the parents, you can see if the Book is part of the whites, pardos, or those listed as enslaved people. So those are the tactics I use when identifying a book.

When I see a couple’s name without the title of don or doña, they are most likely “Pardos.” This is because they were considered part of the elite community when identified with titles. But this is not always the case, as earlier books were selective in determining a person’s race. So, you could have someone listed as white, and they could have been a Pardo, Mulato, etc., at one time. Now in modern times, don or doña is a sign of respect to our elders. In addition, everything depends on the Priest and how they transcribe the information.

Final Thoughts

I will present the confirmations, marriages, and inscriptions of burials on separate pages. To include them all in this post will be overwhelming.

1. Book of Blancos (Whites) San Juan Parish Records, Index of Baptisms

This Book is separated into various tables. First, I grouped those that did not have an index with my notes. And then, I created tables of the books with the index. An index from 1815 and goes through 1877 is the main bulk of this section. It is an extensive index; it took time to break it down by Book and year. Please take your time to become familiar with the format.

2. Military Books, San Juan Parish Records, Index of Baptisms

I present the Military books on a separate table. It makes it easier for me to identify those individuals. As I stated, most of the Military men are Spaniards, “White.” There are exceptions. Finally, You will find Military personnel in other books. Remember, nothing is set in stone with these books. You will discover transcriptions for some of these books. It will save you a great deal of time researching.

3. Pardo, Freed Pardos, Freed Blacks, and Enslaved Books, San Juan Parish Records, Index of Baptisms

Some of these books state Pardo, but further investigating the Book, they also contain Freed Blacks and Enslaved people. Therefore, I categorize that Book as such. In the early 17th century, a few Parish books include all classifications. In addition, the military books are mostly all Spaniards, and some are married to local women. However, a few of these women could be Pardo/Mulato but listed as White. This could be the case of a woman marrying into an elite family and could have made some financial payment to be classified as such.

4. All Classes (Races) San Juan Parish Records, Index of Baptisms

As you will see, a section listing “All Classes” appears in the earlier and mainly in the later books. Again, looking at those books that did not contain the cover sheet, I reviewed how their race was listed in the document.

Part I. San Juan Parish Records, Index of Baptisms

1. Book of Blancos (Whites)

  • Below is a breakdown of all the Parish Books by Race, Year, Image, Index, Notes, and Transcriptions.
  • When there is a transcription available, I have included it.
  • If only an index is included in one Book, I identify the Book and image number.
  • Abbreviations; Pardos/Freed-Blacks/Enslaved (P.FB.E.) Whites; (W), All Classes (AC).

1815 to 1877, Book & Index for Blancos (Whites)

There is an index that covers the years from 1815 to 1877. I have provided a complete breakdown of that index by book number, year, and surname. This index covers all the books classified as Whites except for a Pardo Book (Book 20), which later discovered that it is “ALL Races.”

It was time-consuming and, at times, confusing. If you see any errors, please let me know. Nevertheless, I did my best to capture the years and corresponding book numbers. The handwriting, at times, was difficult to understand; for example, the numbers two and three could have been more apparent.

  • Books 13 and 14 include the year 1834. So keep that in mind when researching that Book.
  • Books 16 and 17 include the year 1846. So keep that in mind when researching that Book.
  • (1855-1858), Book #19 is not filmed.
  • Books 20, 21, 23, and 24 are separate books with their index and are not included in this index.
  • (1872-1875), Book #24 consists of 2 separate books with their index.
  • There is no index for any surnames starting with K, U, and W in this index.
  • If you see the letter M, it means the index is missing.
  • If you see a blank section, there is no index for that surname in the Book for that year, or it continues in the following year.
  • Two indexes for the letter V. A few are better quality, so I included that one when provided.
  • This index includes books classified as All Classes (Books 21 through 26).
  • You will find that the years listed for a particular year may differ from those in the film.

Instructions on how to use the tables below

  • All the tables created are the breakdown of all the indexes for books available to us.
  • They are identified by the year of the book, the image number, and the first letter of the surname.
  • If I am looking for a person with the surname of Aponte, I go to A, look at the year, write down the folio number, then click on the book number and navigate through the pages to look for that page with that folio number.

1815 to 1822, Book 10-11 (44 Images) (Blancos) Index

  • UPDATE as of April 15, 2023, 10:43 AM: Book 10 continues in another film, so it appears to be the remainder of book 10. You can follow the index below and click on this image to locate the documents: Image 1. A big thanks to Luis Bonet for informing me.
  • 44 Images-Indexed by surname. This Book ends April 21, 1816, not 1822. Unfortunately, many “folios” are missing from this Book. (see above)
  • Indexed by surname.

2. Military Books Baptisms, San Juan Parish Records, and their Indexes

  • Note: These books are also included in all tables. I would pay attention to the names of the mothers. They are usually women born on the Island from various towns in Puerto Rico. It is known that many Spaniards married White/Pardo/Mulato women from the Island.
  • Some of these books contain marriages and confirmations. Those will be listed separately. The Baptisms are only listed in the table below.
  • Many of these books include the Grandparent’s names. That is a bonus if your ancestor is listed here, as many earlier documents did not include them.
  • There are a few Baptisms of enslaved children owned by Military Men.

  • When I started the indexing, I overlooked the typewritten one and left both formats. The books for 19, 22, 24, through 26. I did not do one for 20, 21, and 23. So Tables M & N are just other versions of the indexes below (1 to 5).
  • Books 20 & 21 are also included in table M.
  • I suggest skipping the type-written versions in Table M & N for Books 20 through 30.

1858 to 1877-ONE VOLUME OF AN INDEX FOR BOOKS 20,21,22,23,24, and 25.

  • Some of these books have their index included in the Book. The index contains a typed version of the index, which makes it quicker and easier to read.
  • If you see a blank space, there are no names for that particular surname in that Book.
  • Book 20 in the index is identified as a book of Pardo, but it is under the index of All Classes. The transcription provided identifies it as All Classes as well.
  • PDF for Book 21 1863 to 1866. This book only goes up to 1864. The second part covers Baptisms 1864-66. The second part begins with the last five pages of this book. (Per Ivonne Santana Ríos)
  • Index for 22, 24, 25, and 26 are repeated in some of the tables above, but these are type-written and easier to read.

Part II. SUMMARY OF ALL THE films, San Juan Parish Records, Index of Baptisms

  • This section is listed chronologically by date as it appears on Family Search. However, I did add the race, as it is not included in their format, and made some minor changes, so it makes sense.
  • Observations
    • Whites, 1785 to 1796; I would closely examine these books as some women are listed as Pardos.
    • White Children of Spanish Origin, 1796 to 1807; The Book clearly states that these are white children of Spanish Origin. Therefore, the children would be Criollos.
    • I included my notes, including the number of images and relevant information.
    • Abbreviations; Pardos/Freed-Blacks/Enslaved (P.FB.E.), Enslaved (E), Whites; (W), All Classes (AC).

    Hi,

Under ALL CLASSES it seems that we are missing the table for Libro 23 1869-1872.

    • Thank you Luis, I had the book but under another classification. Thank you again for alerting me.
