A brief history
Patillas is a municipality of Puerto Rico located on the southeastern coast. And is south of San Lorenzo and neighboring Yabucoa, Maunabo, and east of Guayama and Arroyo. It consists of over 15 barrios. In addition, the church is part of the downtown area and the city’s administrative center. Finally, it is part of the Guayama Metropolitan area.
As early as 1760, there were people already settled in Patillas. However, It was not a permanent settlement until 1811 or 1813. In 1841 a fire in Patillas killed many people. Hence, the reason why many of the parochial books are water damaged and missing.
Accordingly, there was an establishment of a sugar cane mill that took advantage of the valley’s agricultural potential. Thus, this establishment provided a good source of income for the neighbors. In addition, it also was the main reason for the town’s foundation in 1811. As a result, Mrs. Adelina Cintrón, owner of “La Finca Patillas,” donated about 8 acres of land for the foundation. Most of the neighbors then relocated to the barrio of Cacao Bajo, on the west side of the town.
