- Part III. Descendants of José Ortiz Colón & Doña Fabiana Torres (Pending)
Introduction
My research on Juan Josef Ortiz Colon
Juan Josef Ortiz Colon and his Genealogy; this is a continuation of my previous research on the Ortiz Brothers and the expansion from an article by Dr. don Jose Angel Colon Perez (RIP). (The Ortiz brothers with different second surnames; their genealogy, Part 1) His original composition entitled “Sobre Los Ortiz de Peña en Coamo, “appeared in the Boletín de la Sociedad Puertorriqueña de Genealogía, VOL. VI April 1994 NUM 1/2.
Below is my research on the descendants. It includes the names of their children, spouses, and grandchildren that I could locate. Unfortunately, I did not research more profoundly into the grandchildren. If anyone descends from any of these children and would like to share your research, please send them to me, and I can write another article and include them.
My primary reason for this research is to determine the name of the mother, Maria Concepcion (Garcia Rodriguez Bonilla.) Therefore, I have provided the research and the conclusion.
Juan Josef Ortiz Colon & Maria Concepcion Garcia Rodriguez Bonilla
Juan Josef Ortiz Colon
Birth: Abt. 1733 in Valle de Coamo, Puerto Rico

Source: Coamo LD1 1773-1810 Image #1889-1890 f. 149-149 Married to Maria Garcia, 56 years old, left no will. Parents not indicated.
Maria Concepcion Rodriguez (Maria Concepcion Garcia Rodriguez Bonilla or Rodriguez Garcia Y Bonilla)
Birth: Abt. 1757 in Valle de Coamo, Puerto Rico
Death: Unknown (Have not located at this time, ongoing.)
Aliases For Dona Maria
She appears with several aliases, or surnames, to be exact, on her children’s baptisms. They are as follows:
- Maria Concepcion Bonilla
- Maria Garcia
- Maria Concepcion Garcia
- Maria Concepcion
- Maria Rodriguez
Maria Rodriguez is used mainly on her children’s marriage certificates and appears as Maria Garcia on her husband’s death record. I believe her name is Maria Concepcion Garcia Rodriguez Bonilla or Rodriguez Garcia Bonilla, as it sometimes appears in other people with the same surname. One of the surnames could be a compound last name, “apellido compuesto.” Compound surnames are also double-barrelled sure names, meaning they have more than one word.
As for Dona Maria, I have discovered some families appear as Garcia Rodriguez Bonilla or Rodiguez Garcia Bonilla in Coamo, Puerto Rico. They all appear related. I will discuss this further in my summary below. Therefore after evaluating the data, I am convinced that Maria Garcia and Maria Concepcion Rodriguez are the same.
Based on the initial research done by Don Jose A. Colon Perez, as well as my research, I have put together known children for Juan (Josef) Joseph Ortiz Colon and Maria Concepcion Rodriguez:
Children of Juan Josef Ortiz Colon and Maria Concepcion Garcia Rodriguez Bonilla

- Death: Death records for this couple have not been located
Child: Maria de la Cruz (1778)
NOTES:
There is no marriage record available for this couple. Most likely married before book one of marriages for 1778-1798.
I believe Miguel married Maria Torres Bermudez, daughter of Eusebio de Torres and Catarina Bermudez. Catarina appears with the last name of de Lugo and Tirado in various baptism records for her children. A baptism occurred on Feb 1760 for a Maria where the mother appears as Catarina Tirado. There is another baptism record for a (Maria) Jacinta, the only daughter born to Eugenio & Catarina in 1768. I am not sure who belongs to Maria since that is such a common name, but I thought I note them both for your review.*
I do believe I have the right spouse for Miguel. Their child’s godparents lead me to think so. A daughter of this couple named Maria de la Cruz, born on September 13, 1778, whose godparents are Eugenio Torres Y Catarina de Bermudez (de Lugo), (Coamo LB2 1774-1790 Image #462 f105v). Miguel has a sister named Gregoria, who married Eusebio Torres Bermudez (see Gregoria below,) whose husband is Eugenio Torres Bermudez, same parents as Maria Torres Bermudez. A pair of siblings marrying another pair of siblings. This information was not part of Don Jose’s original research.

NOTES: Per Don Jose’s article he states; “En la partida Pedro aparece como Pedro Ortiz Colon, lo que indica uso del “Ortiz Colon” como apellido compuesto.” Translates to; Pedro appears as “Ortiz Colon,” which indicates he went under the compound name of Ortiz Colon. Parents recorded as Juan Ortiz Colón and Maria Concepcion Rodriguez for the wedding record. Simona Gertrudis’s father was recorded as Florencio Gomez in her baptism record. Pedro appeared in a census in 1838 at the age of 60, along with his wife and several children. That would have estimated him being born in 1778, but that was the year Camila was born. I believe Pedro was older. In Don Jose’s original article, it appears he did not reference the Coamo census record.

NOTES: *(El segundo grado surge de que Juan Y Jose eran Hermanos. Manuel fallecio poco despues, dejando un hijo nombrado Jose Maria. Translation: Their marriage contract indicates that Juan and Jose were brothers and their children were first cousins. Manuel passed away shortly after his marriage but left one child. Andrea’s marriage documented her parents as Juan Ortiz and Maria Concepcion Bonilla.
11. Isidro Ortiz Colon Rodriguez
Birth: Abt. 1788 in Valle de Coamo, Puerto Rico Baptized: Abt. 1788 in Valle de Coamo, Puerto Rico Death: August 16, 1801, in Valle de Coamo, Puerto Rico Source: Coamo, LD1 1773-1810 Image #2058 f.310v
NOTES: Died at the age of 13 years. Parents recorded as Joseph Ortiz and Maria Rodriguez.
There is an 8-year gap where I cannot locate children born between 1769-1771 for the parents. It’s possible that Pedro, Andrea, and Isidro could have been born earlier than suggested. We do have a death record for Isidro, who died in 1801 at 13 years old, more or less, which would make his dob around 1788, possibly making him the last child to be born to this couple. Pedro appears in a census record for 1838 for Coamo at the age of 60, making him born around 1778, but that was the year Casimira was born (verified). We have not located Andrea’s birth record, but we have a wedding record for 1798. She married a couple of years before Pedro. I speculate she may be older than Pedro and Isidro.
Additional Observations about Juan Josef Ortiz Colon
The reason why Don Jose listed the father’s full name as Juan Josef Ortiz Colon is due to the way he appeared in certain records belonging to his children. He has appeared mainly as Juan Ortiz and a few times as Joseph. At the time of his death, he appears as Joseph and not Juan, which was not located when Don Jose wrote the article. Pedro’s marriage record listed himself as Ortiz Colon, used as a compound surname, “apellido compuesto,” as stated by Don Jose. Isidro’s death record listed himself as Joseph Ortiz, not Juan. Don Jose also indicated that there were two men, one named Juan Jose Ortiz de Pena, married to Maria Garcia, and a Juan Ortiz Colon, married to Maria Concepcion Rodriguez. I believe both couples are one of the same. Therefore, Juan is likely Juan Jose(f) Ortiz de Pena Colon.
I also believe Maria’s full last name is “Garcia Rodriguez Bonilla.” See the chart below I created showing the different names she appears in documents. Four other individuals use that last name in Coamo, Puerto Rico, supporting my theory of why I believe that is her full name.
Other individuals appearing in Coamo, Puerto Rico as Garcia Rodríguez Bonilla:
- Esteban Rodriguez Garcia Bonilla married Maria Rodriguez and baptized a child named Jose Rodriguez Y Rodriguez on May 3, 1796, Image #849. Godparents are Jose Cantos Davila and “Josefa Rodriguez Garcia Bonilla.”
- Francisco Garcia Rodriguez Bonilla married Eusebia Mateo and baptized a child on May 4, 1796 Image #851. God Parents are Victoriano Colon por Antonio Colon and Brigida Bonilla.
- Inez Garcia Rodriguez Bonilla as Godmother along with Gregorio Perdomo to a child baptized by a couple named Jose Gabriel Sanchez and Catarina Cantos Davila; Jose de Santa Rosa Sanchez on September 20, 1801, Image #965. (Catarina is Jose’s sister that married Josefa Rodriguez Garcia Bonilla (see #1 above)
- Valentin Garcia Rodriguez Bonilla married Estebania Mateo, who had several children born between 1799-1808 in Coamo, Puerto Rico. The Godparents selection is interesting for this couple as they pair up the following individuals for their children: Florentino Alvarado & Eugenia Ortiz, Ambrocio Vega & Francisca Ortiz, and Juan Alvarado & Cayetana Rivera. As you can see, the Garcia Rodriguez Bonilla family is intertwined with the Ortiz family.
- Juan Ortiz and “Maria Garcia” appear as Godparents to Josefa Rodriguez Garcia Bonilla and her husband Jose del Canto Davila’s child on April 6, 1780, in Coamo, Puer, to Rico Image #496.
