In 1846, Puente Camuy, spanning the Camuy River, connected the town with Hatillo. The town’s name originates from the Taíno language, with various legends proposing its meaning. One legend links it to the Taíno word for “sun,” while another suggests “beautiful scenery.” Additionally, some claim it was the name of the Taíno chief Yumac. Yumacy is Camuy if you spell it backward. The municipality’s coat of arms embodies the “sun” legend.
