History San Lorenzo, Puerto Rico
San Lorenzo was founded in 1737 under the name San Miguel de Hato Grande by Valeriano Muñoz de Oneca. He was from Seville, Spain. The original settlers of the then-village were the Muñoz de Oneca, López de Alicea, and Sánchez de Cos families.
The exact date is not sure, as the parochial archives at some point had a fire, and the records no longer exist. Therefore, no copies were available. However, Coll y Toste believes it was in 1811. Other investigators, such as Generoso Muńoz Morales, indicate that it was between March of 1813 and April of 1814.
Gregorio Muńoz de Oneca donated forty acres of land. In the XVIII century, the San Miguel de Hato Grande ranch was part of the original Hato Grande de los Delgado ranch, an enormous extension of land granted by royal decree to a family. It was part of a ward with an extensive valley that had as headquarters Caguas.
In 1737, a hermitage appears in the parish of Caguas under the teachings of San Miguel. The church appeared in 1812. In 1811 or 1813, its officially given the name of San Lorenzo. According to history, a saint appears in the fertile valley of the river.
The Town of the Samaritans
San Lorenzo, “The Town of the Samaritans.” During the 1920s, in the Hato de San Lorenzo ward, according to journalistic versions of the time and verbal testimonies of people who lived then: multitudes would go to a place in the mountains where a young 12-year-old girl lived.
According to versions, this young girl named Julia Vázquez Torres had supernatural powers that repeatedly provided health to needy people. Only homemade remedies with medicinal plants, minerals, and the pure waters of a nearby well are available during these undeniable feats. This is where the young girl cared for the people. With time, the young girl became an adult, but her reputation as upright and dedicated to doing good accompanied her daily “.
