Digitized Church Records of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico
Digitized Church Records of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico; Did you know that what we know today as Río Piedras had its origins as a settlement called El Roble along the shores of the Piedras River? Originally, it was known as the Village or Villa del Roble, and the official foundation took place in 1714 under the name of El Roble with the authorization of Governor Juan de Rivera. The name comes from the Piedras River that crosses it. In 1832, Río Piedras comprised four wards: Roble (pueblo), Cupey, Caimito, and Monacillos. Interesting fact: in 1823, the municipal government requested Governor Miguel de la Torre to approve the purchase of land to form an urban zone divided and granted to people interested in constructing homes. This action resulted in the formation of streets and alleys, giving the appearance of a metropolitan area within the countryside.
