San Miguel de Trujillo Bajo-A Town That Has Disappeared

Trujillo Bajo, what happened? During the 18th century, a large cattle ranch was divided into two regions with respect to the Cariabón River, known today as the Río Grande de Loíza. The inhabitants of the upper part began efforts to establish a town founded in 1801 with the name Santa Cruz de Trujillo.

The city started to be called Trujillo Alto after the lower part of the inhabitants formed their village in 1817 with the name of San Miguel de Trujillo Bajo. Over the years, another town was created in the northeast of Trujillo Bajo, which in 1857 became a town named San Fernando de la Carolina. Trujillo Bajo coexisted with Trujillo Alto and Carolina until 1873, when, unable to meet its economic obligations, it declared bankruptcy. As a result, the authorities dissolved the town and passed all its neighborhoods to Carolina.

Today almost nothing remains of Trujillo Bajo. Its urban center, its streets, and its church disappeared. All that remains is the name and a cemetery where the citizens of a town whose memory is about to disappear in eternal sleep. San Miguel de Trujillo Bajo (1817-1873).1

The church books listed below can be found on FamilySearchs’ website. Some books listed that are not available online may still exist at the Archivo Histórico Arquidiócedano in Old San Juan. But many books could be lost forever. This could be due to natural disasters, deterioration of the books, etc. I would also research in Carolina, Trujillo Alto, and surrounding towns.
